A man wearing a baseball-style Chicago Blackhawks hat asked a North Aurora liquor store clerk for Hennessy before robbing him at gunpoint Tuesday afternoon, said Deputy Chief Scott Buziecki of the North Aurora Police Department.
Dressed in a gray Nike hoodie, dark sunglasses, dark jeans and white cap advertising the Blackhawks as Stanley Cup Champions, the full-bearded suspect initially went inside the store on the first block of South Lincolnway and walked around for a few minutes, then approached the clerk to ask for a specific type of liquor, according to a news release and surveillance photos from North Aurora police.
After making his request, the man left the store, returning less than a minute later and displaying a gun with a gloved right hand while demanding cash from the register, according to police.
Police said the gun was described as a black, semi-automatic pistol with plastic over the barrel.
The man took an undisclosed amount of cash and was last seen running east toward the Fox River, according to police, who were dispatched to the store at 5:32 p.m. Tuesday and said a search of the area was unsuccessful.
Investigators used the store’s surveillance video to get images of the suspect, who police further described as a male with an apparent tattoo or writing in the area of his left hand and wrist.
Buziecki said the clerk was male, but he could not immediately answer whether anyone else was in the store. The clerk was not injured, police said.
North Aurora police are continuing to investigate the case, and ask anyone with information to call the department’s Investigations Division at 630-897-8705, ext. 610; or to leave anonymous tips at the same general line by selecting option 3.
