A new inmate at Rikers Island was beat up by eight other prisoners.
A new inmate at the New York’s Rikers Island received a brutal welcoming.
Disturbing video posted by Pix 11 News shows the newcomer, wearing a green jumpsuit, talking with another man in a white tank top.
As the men talk, two other inmates approach from behind. Suddenly, another prisoner in a green jumpsuit walks up to the new inmate and punches him causing the newcomer to fall to the ground.
Seven other guys quickly join the first man and pummel the victim with punches and kicks.
A female guard in the unit doesn’t immediately break up the jailhouse brawl. Only after a second guard comes in does she stop the men from fighting and remove the victim.
After the fight, the inmates are seen taking the victim’s belongings.

Pix 11 reports that the men attacked the newcomer because they didn’t want him moved into their unit. The outlet also reported that they are members of the gang Bloods.
The Correction Officers Union said the female officer handled the situation correctly by waiting for help.
"If she would have used her pepper spray, they all could have turned on her," said the union’s president Elias Husamudeen.
Rikers has been embroiled in controversy lately.
Last month, Brooklyn native and former inmate Marc Lazarre filed a lawsuit against seven city correction officers alleging that he was starved for two days while in solitary confinement and guards broke his arm when they took him out. He also said he was placed in a solitary cell for unknown reasons and given a phone that didn’t work. When he refused to give the phone back the officers became angry, the suit stated.
Officer Benny Santiago was also accused of impregnating a female inmate after allegedly raping two others. A lawsuit filed stated that nobody investigated the allegation Santiago got the inmate pregnant.
